Our Story
Our Vision
Remote Area Medical (RAM) is a non-profit organization dedicated to delivering essential medical aid to the world’s most remote and underserved communities. With a vision to provide high-quality, compassionate healthcare, RAM works to improve the quality of life for impoverished and isolated populations. Dr. Heidi Sampang, the founder and country manager of RAM Philippines, leads the organization’s efforts in the country, working to extend this mission to those who need it most.
RAM Philippines
RAM’s journey in the Philippines began in 2013, when it stepped in to assist in the aftermath of Typhoon Yolanda. Among the volunteers was Dr. Heidi Sampang, a pediatrician trained in New York, whose experience on the ground sparked a deep desire to make a lasting impact. Witnessing the urgent need for better healthcare, Dr. Sampang returned to the Philippines with a mission: to address the disparities in healthcare access across the country’s most remote and conflict-affected regions. With a Global Health degree from Northwestern University, she founded RAM Philippines. In March 2017, the organization was formally registered with the Securities and Exchange Commission, solidifying its commitment to expanding healthcare services nationwide. Today, Dr. Sampang serves as the country manager of RAM, leading efforts to improve health outcomes for underserved communities across the Philippines.
Beginnings
Remote Area Medical was founded by Stan Brock in 1985.
“My vision for Remote Area Medical developed when I suffered a personal injury while living among the Wapishana Indians in Guyana, South America. I was isolated from medical care, which was about a 26 day journey away. I witnessed the near devastation of whole tribes by what would have been simple or minor illnesses to more advanced cultures. When I left Guyana, I vowed to find a way to deliver basic medical aid to people in the world’s inaccessible regions. So, in 1985 I established the non-profit, Remote Area Medical or as most people know us – RAM. RAM is the way I have kept that promise, not only to the Wapishana Indians, but to thousands around the world in similar conditions. In other words, there are Wapishanas everywhere.”
